My friendship with your sister was very short, but has left me with a special feeling of warmth. Geoff Holmes, another friend Kathy, and I had the privilege of playing bridge with Virginia on Friday afternoons [at Fidalgo Care Center] for several months and I was fond of the sparkle in her eye when we arrived and played a few hands of bridge, but more importantly, I think, had time to be friends.

I consider Virginia one of the essential threads of the fabric of our island community and history. She is someone who was reliably there with her warm smile, a twinkle in her eye, quick wit and a curious mind. Whether seeing her at the Farmer’s Market, or on the ferry for her regular swim dates, or at gatherings with friends and community, seeing Virginia always lifted my spirits.
When I learned that she had passed, I was dismayed because I hadn’t even realized she was ill. I wept for the loss of her, and not being able to say goodbye. That night, she came to me in a dream, fully vibrant and smiling. I was so relieved, and told her that I thought she was gone, and I was so sad not to get to say goodbye. Then she gave me the warmest hug, which I could literally feel. I truly felt that she came to say goodbye, to take care of ME. That Virginia….. I will miss her.
